Year8 Weathering Flashcards
What is physical weathering?
Temperature change, the action of water and ice, crystallisation of salts, wind, living plants
How does temperature change weather rocks?
Solids expand when heated and shrink when cooled, so rocks can heat up during the day and crack at night when they cool down
How does water and ice weather rocks?
Ice can split rocks by cooling them rapidly.
Water running over rocks can gradually wear away material.
How does wind weather rocks?
Fine particles of rock carried by the wind eg. Sand can weather or wear away rocks
How do plants weather rocks?
Plants roots can split rocks
What does weathering mean?
Weathering is the physical and Chemical processes that break rocks down
What is a rock cycle?
When rocks are broken down and remade.
