Year 9 Core Knowledge Flashcards
What are state symbols used for?
To show the physical state of reactants and products in a reaction.
What is the state symbol for a solid?
(s)
What is the state symbol for a liquid?
(l)
What is the state symbol for a gas?
(g)
What is the state symbol for an aqueous?
(aq)
Aqueous
A substance dissolved in water.
Polymer
A substance of high relative formula mass made up of small repeating units known as monomers.
Nanoparticles
Nanoparticles are structures that are 1-00nm in size, of the order of a few hundred atoms.
Isotopes
Forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei.
Covalent bond
A bond formed between non-metal atoms by sharing the outer electrons
Ionic bond
An ionic bond is a bond formed when metal atoms donate their outer shell electron(s) to the outer shell of non-metal atoms forming oppositely charged ions, which are attached by electrostatic forces.
How many types of subatomic particles do atoms contain?
3
What are the three subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Relative atomic mass
The number of protons and neutrons in the atom.
Atomic number
How many protons there are in the atom.
