What is globalisation?
Globalisation is the growing connections between countries. People in one country are connected to those in another in many different ways.
TNCs
Trans National Corporations- companies that operate in two or more countries eg. Nike, McDonalds.
How have TNCs helped Globalisation?
By investing in other countries and opening factories there
Why do TNCs operate in different countries?
- Wages in LEDC countries are often lower so TNCs save money and can make more profit
- Opening factories in other countries can mean there are more customers to sell their products to
- Some developing countries don’t have strict health and safety standards so TNCs can save money by working people harder or not having to meet environmental guidelines.
Why have TNCs invested in Asia (human factors)?
- Large population to be workers
- Good education system so people are educated
- Government supports investment from other countries
- Speak English
- Good relationship with other countries to trade with them
Why have TNCs invested in Asian countries (Physical factors)?
- Good location near other countries for trade
- Close to coast - easy to transport goods via ship
- Does not suffer from natural hazard (i,e volcanoes or earthquakes)
Impacts of TNCs (human advantages)
- People in developing countries are given job opportunities
- TNCs help a country develop as the wages het spent in the local are and improves wealth
- TNCs often invest in health or other facilities that improve people’s lives
Impacts of TNCs (human disadvantages)
- Working conditions are not always very good - people work very long hours in poor conditions.
- there may be accidents as health and safety laws are not always good eg. Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh.
Impacts of TNCs (environmental advantages)
-Investment in a developing country might improve the natural environment
Impacts of TNCs (environmental disadvantages)
- Most products are now shipped from overseas and this increases CO2 emissions
- Sometimes there is conflict over natural resources in developing countries` such as water
Impacts of Globalisation (Asia advantages)
- Improvements in standards of living
- Job opportunities in new types of industry
- Investment from TNCs improves infrastructure (road, airports, energy)
Impacts of Globalisation (Asia disadvantages)
- Loss of individual cultre
- Exploitation of workers
- Environmental damage
- Over reliance on TNCs - if they leave the country suffers

- Wide range of cheap goods are now available
- Improves international relations between countries
Impacts of Globalisation (World disadvantages)
- Job losses in developed countries
- Some countries are left out of investment from TNCs
- Increased climate change from transporting goods world wide.
