You can throw with a weighted rope which is ideal if the swimmer is within 8 metres of safety as the weight will ensure the rope goes further than an unweighted rope which can only reach about 6 metres. You can also throw a buoyant aid such as a kickboard, pool noodle, floaty or a lifejacket within 5 metres of safety. After the person grabs the item thrown instruct them on how to use the aid to reach safety.
