Year 8 Term 1&2 - Elements Flashcards
What do atoms in elements look like?
They are all the same size and shape
What is the chemical symbol for helium
He

Cobalt
What element is Pb
Lead
What chemical symbol is Ne
Neon
What element is Ca
Calcium
What element is Ra
Radium
What element is Rn
Radon
What element is Ag
Silver
Are metals found on the left or right of the dividing line on the Periodic Table
Left
Are there more metals or non-metals?
Metals
Describe physical appearance of most metals
Solid at room temperature and shiny, silvery grey colour
Do metals conduct electricity when solid?
Yes
Do metals conduct heat well?
Yes
Do metals have high or low melting pointS?
High
Which words apply to metals: ductile, sonorous, malleable, brittle, soft, dense
Sonorous, malleable, dense, ductile
How do you test if an element conducts electricity?
Place a fresh sample of an element in a circuit with a bulb; if it conducts electricity the bulb will light, if it doesn’t it won’t.
How do you produce magnesium oxide from magnesium?
You burn magnesium over a Bunsen burner flame so that it reacts with the oxygen in the air
Two test tubes: one sulphur dioxide and other calcium oxide. What will be the difference once you add universal indicator?
The universal indicator will turn red in sulphur dioxide and blue/purple in calcium oxide. This means that non-metal oxides like sulphur dioxide are acidic, and metal oxides like calcium oxide are alkaline.
What colour and pH will magnesium oxide be after adding universal indicator?
Blue/green, pH 9.0 meaning it’s an alkali
What colour and pH will phosphorus oxide be when universal Indicator is added?
Red/orange with pH 2.0/3.0, meaning it’s an acid
Why is copper an unusual metal?
It is not silvery grey; it’s orangey brown
What is unusual about bromine and mercury?
They are both liquid at room temperature
What is unusual about graphite?
It conducts electricity well
What is unusual about silicon?
It’s a shiny silvery grey non metal
What is unusual about lead?
It has a low melting point
What does it mean if an element has allotropes?
The element can be put together in different ways, creating different forms of it e.g: carbon turns into diamond and graphite
What are some differences between diamond and graphite?
Diamond is transparent and very hard/dense whereas graphite is opaque and soft, and graphite can conduct electricity whereas diamond cannot.
What are the properties of metals?
Conduct electricity well
High melting points
Solid at room temperature
Shiny silver grey appearance
Conduct heat well
