Why is venus the hottest planet?

A

Its atmosphere of carbon dioxide means the planet has a very large greenhouse effect - heat is trapped and cannot escape, warming the planet. Meanwhile Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, was so hot it had its atmosphere ‘burned off’ years ago, so the heat escapes instantly now
