Year 8 Electricity Flashcards
What are the two types of charge?
Positive and negative
In a parallel circuit, what is the voltage across each of the branches in relation to the voltage across the battery?
They are the same
In a series circuit, what is the voltage across all of the branches in relation to the voltage across the battery?
The voltage across all of the branches adds up to the voltage across the battery
What is the current like in a series circuit?
It is the same at every point on the circuit
What is the current like in a parallel circuit?
The current in all of the branches adds up to the current by the battery
Why do long wires have more resistance?
Electrons hit against more more metal ions, which makes them lose energy
Why do thin wires have more resistance?
The electrons hit against the sides of the wire more, causing them to lose energy
Who made the first battery?
Volta
Why does a wire get hotter when a current passes through it?
The electrons bump into atoms on the wire, which transfers kinetic energy into heat energy
What is Ohm’s law?
Voltage = current x resistance Resistance = voltage ÷ current
True or false: adding more resistors in parallel decreases the current in the circuit
False, it increases the current
