Year 7 lab safety, particle model and separating mixtures Flashcards
If a solute dissolves then it isβ¦..
Soluble
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration going down a concentration gradient. It only happens with fluids (liquids & gases).
What is a solvent?
A liquid that does the dissolving.
What is Chromatography?
Splitting up the different colours in a substance to show what the substance is made up of.
What is a solute?
A solute is the substance that dissolves into the solvent.
What is distillation?
Distillation is the process of separating out a solid which dissolves from a solvent by evaporating the solvent and condensing it separately.
When does a heating curve go flat?
When it is changing state (solid to liquid and vice-versa or liquid to gas and vice-versa)
When does a heating curve go upwards?
On heating but when there is no change of state
Do all substances have the same boiling point?
No!
Which of these can change its volume?
A. Solid
B. Liquid
C. Gas
C. Gas
Which of these can be compressed?
A. Solid
B. Liquid
C. Gas
C. Gas
Which of these can be poured?
A. Solid
B. Liquid
C. Gas
B. Liquid and C. Gas
Which of these can change its shape?
A. Solid
B. Liquid
C. Gas
B. Liquid and C. Gas
What is the boiling point of pure water?
100 degrees centigrade
What does insoluble mean?
It will not dissolve (in that solvent)
What does evaporation mean?
Evaporation is the process when liquids turn into gases
What is condensation?
Condensation is the process when gases turn into liquids
What is melting?
Melting is the process when solids turn into liquids
What is freezing?
Freezing is when a liquid turns into a solid
What does solidifying mean?
Solidifying means turning from liquid into solid
What is sublimation?
Sublimation is the process of a solid turning directly into a gas without becoming a liquid
What is filtration
Filtering an insoluble solid out from a liquid
What does saturated mean
A solution is βsaturatedβ if it holds the maximum possible amount of a solute
What is dissolving
Dissolving is the process where a solute splits up and spreads out in a solvent (dissolves)
What are main hazards in a science lab?
Stuff not put away, wet floor, hot stuff, glass, chemicals.
What is the boiling point of water
100 degrees Celsius / centigrade
In which state are the particles regularly arranged?
A solid
In which state are the particles able to flow over one another but have a constant volume?
A liquid
In what state are the particles able to take the volume of the container?
A gas
Which states of matter cannot be squashed?
Both liquids and solids cannot be squashed
What are the properties of a solid?
A solid canβt be squashed, it canβt be poured, it canβt change it shape and canβt change its volume.
What are the properties of a liquid?
A liquid canβt be squashed, it can be poured, it can change itβs shape but it canβt change itβs volume
What are the properties of a gas?
A gas can be squashed, it can be poured, it can change, it shape and it can change its volume
