year 2 (p45- Flashcards
what are descriptive statistics?
presenting, organising and summarising data
e.g. mean medium, mode, range
what are inferential statistics?
drawing conclusions about a population based on data observed in a sample
e.g. sign test
what does it mean if results are statistical significant?
results are unlikely to be due to chance
what does probability mean?
how likely or unlikely it is that some event will occur
explain the scale of probability in psychological research
from zero to one
what are the three decimal values of probability?
- 1
- 05
- 01
which level of significance do we favour?
0.05
what does 0.05 level of significance mean?
5% likelihood the results are due to chance
how can we decide if a hypothesis can be accepted?
compare th calculated value with the table of critical value at the level of significance chided to decide if the result is significant. if significant result the hypothesis can be accepted
explain the 0.01 level of significance
is a more stringent level to set
1% likelihood results are due to chance
explain the 0.10 level of significance
not significant
10% likelihood results are due to chance - too high
why do we use 0.05 level of significance?
it strikes a balance of making a type 1 or type 11 error
what is a type 1 error?
the bull hypothesis is rejected when it should have been accepted
what is a type II error?
bull hypothesis is accepted when it should have been rejected
what is nominal data?
frequency headcount,
categories,
e.g. favourite food
