Year 11 Recap Flashcards
What is activation energy? (Ea)
the energy required to increase the energy of the reactants such that they undergo the reaction
What is the enthalpy of the reaction?
the difference in energy of the reactants and products (the amount of energy released or absorbed by the reaction)
What is intermolecular bonding?
the bonds that exist BETWEEN molecules
What are the 3 types of intermolecular bonding?
dispersion forces
dipole dipole bonding
H bonding
Dispersion forces?
very weak intermolecular bonds
exist between all molecules
dispersion forces increase with molar mass (as more electrons)
What is different about dispersion forces compared to diople diple and H bonding?
they are the only intermolecular bonds between non polar moelcueles
What is net dipole?
when dipoles in a molecule add up, + and - end.
Dipole-dipole bonding?
when molecules with net dipoles bond. (Stronger than weak dispersion forces)
Hydrogen bonding is
intermolecular, strong dipole-dipole bonds
H atom bonded to N,O,F atom .
Dipole dipole bonds depend on what?
the attraction between the negative part of one molecule and the positive part of another
(only work in polar molecules)
What is solubility a result of?
Solute X will dissolve solute Y if the intermolecular bonds in each are of similar strength
