Year 11 Human Biology Tissues Flashcards
What are tissues?
similar/identical cells that work together to carry out a particular task.
What is epithelial Tissue`
lines internal and external surfaces. Organised into single or layered sheets of cells.
What ids epithelial tissue specialised for
absorption, secretion or excretion.
Types of epithelial tissue
simple cuboidal
simple squamous
simple columnar
Stratified squamous
What is connective tissue
The major supporting tissue of the body
made BY cells, not of cells
ranges from dense (bone) to fluid (blood)
Function of connective tissue
binds structures together and provides support and protection
What is muscle tissue
highly specialised cells called fibres. held together by connective tissue
Main feature of muscle tissue
contactile, voluntary and involuntary movements. accomplished by the interaction of contractile proteins.
Types of muscle tissue
Cardiac: branching cells connected by discs
skeletal muscle: long striated cells w multiple nuclei
smooth muscle: no striations
what is Nervous tissue and what is it made up of
structural and functional cells of the nervous system
made up of neurons that collect, process and transmit information around the body via electronic signals.
where is nervous tissue
brain, spinal cord, nerves
