Year 11 Biology vocab - microoganisms Flashcards
Microbes which often consist of hyphae and grow through their food source.
Fungi
The thread like structures of a fungus.
Hyphae
Fruiting bodies produced by fungi that release spores.
Sporangia
The tiny capsules that fungi release to allow them to reproduce. They are dispersed by the wind.
Spores
Microorganisms that lack a cell nucleus (not a virus).
Bacteria
Describes the method by which bacteria feed – excreting enzymes onto a food source, which breakdown the food into small particles and this is absorbed back into the bacteria.
Extra-cellular digestion
Method by which bacteria reproduce. Simply splitting in two.
Binary fission
Non-living “objects” that use living cells to make copies of themselves.
Viruses
Method by which viruses make copies of themselves.
Replication
The group of microorganisms that obtains its nutrition from dead material.
Saprophytes
Organisms that live in or on another living plant or animal.
Parasites
A disease causing microorganism.
Pathogen
Free from infection or growth of microorganisms.
Sterile
Lab reproduction of microbes on nutrient agar or nutrient broth.
Culture
Chemicals produced by fungi that kill other microorganisms.
Antibiotics
