Recruitment
The process of selecting and employing staff.
External Recruitment
Recruiting from outside the business.
Internal Recruitment
Recruiting from inside the business.
Job Descripton
Shows what tasks, skills and qualifications are needed for the job.
Person Specification
Shows the type of person the business needs to recruit.
CV
Curriculum Vitae. An applicant’s record of skills, experience and qualifications.
Short List
The applicants most likely to be good at the job. These will be interviewed.
Training
Developing the skills and knowledge needed by the business.
Development
Developing skills and knowledge to improve the worker.
Induction Training
Initial or introductory training.
Appraisal
The process used to see how well a worker is doing.
Remuneration
The package of pay and benefits that is the reward for working for a business.
Overtime
Extra pay for extra time worked, usually paid at a higher rate than normal time. (Time and a half, or double time.)
Profit Sharing
When some profit is shared among workers as a reward for their efforts.
Job Rotation
Letting workers do a number of different jobs to maintain interest in work.
Job Enrichment
Giving the employee greater responsibility where each team or ‘cell’ produces an entire product.
Job Enlargement
Increasing the employee’s range of responsibilities and/or skills.
Leadership Styles
The way managers operate.
Minimum Wage
The least that, by law, an employer can pay.
Employment Rights
The rights of workers.
Redundancy
When a persons job is no longer needed.
Discrimination
Acting against someone for a reason they cannot control.
Industrial Relations
The relationship between employers and employees.
Collective Bargaining
When one representative group negotiates with another.
Industrial Dispute
When these relations break down.
Industrial Action
When one or other side uses tactics to try to force agreement.
Strike
Withdrawal of Labour.
Picket
A group of workers stationed at the entrance to a workplace to try and persuade others to support industrial action.
