How do you find the amount of neutrons in an atom?
Mass number subtract protons
What is the mass number?
Protons and neutrons
How do you tell an atom is neutral?
Neutral atoms have same number of protons and electrons

What is the valence shell?
Outer shell
What is a covalent bond?
When 2 atoms or more ‘share’ their electrons so other atoms also have a full shell
What is an ionic bond?
When an atom ‘borrows’ or ‘gives away’ electron/a to another atom so they have a full shell
What is a covalent bond made up of?

What is a precipitation reaction?
When two soluble reactants are combined to create one soluble and one insoluble solution
What is an atom?
Unit of matter
What is an isotope?
Atoms that have the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons
What is a compound?
When atoms of different types of elements join together they make molecules or crystal lattices called compounds
What are acids?
Substance that produce hydrogen ions. Usually contain H in its formula.
What is a base?
Substances that produce hydroxide ions
What is a salt?
Formed when an acid and a base react
Why do particles have to collide to react?
Particles must collide to create a reaction
How does a catalyst increase a reaction?
Creates an easier pathway, therefore a faster reaction
Why are examples of slow reactions?
Rusting, ripening and fermentation of wine
What are examples of fast reactions?
Explosions, vinegar and bicarbonate reacting and the burning of gas in a Bunsen
What are the 5 principles that control the reaction rate?
Concentration, temperature, agitation, catalyst and surface area
What is a reaction rate?
The amount of time it takes for the reaction to occur
