Metals, non-metals & metalloids. Flashcards
How are elements on the periodic table classified?
If they are metals, non-metals or metalloids.
Name 3 physical properties of metals?
Shine when polished (lustrous), can be bent into new shapes with out breaking (malleable) and can be stretched into wires (ductile).
Name 3 metals?
Aluminium, copper, lead, mercury, sodium, tin and zinc are all common metals.
Why don’t we use pure metals?
Because they have properties that make them impractical. I.e are too soft to be made into anything.
What is an alloy?
A metal combined with another element
Name 3 alloys?
Steel, brass, bronze are common alloys.
Name 3 properties of non-metals?
Poor conductors of electricity, are brittle, low melting points and are dull.
What are allotropes?
Pure carbon
Name 3 allotropes?
Diamond, amorphous carbon and graphite.
What are metalloids?
Semi-metals
Name the only metal that is liquid at room temp?
Mercury
