Year 10 End Of Year Flashcards
What are all substances made up of?
-Atoms
What is an element?
-Substance containing only one type of atom
What is a compound made up of?
-More than one type of atom
What is at the centre of an atom?
A nucleus, surrounded by electrons
Balance the symbol equation :
H2 + O2 = H2O
2H2 + O2 = 2H2O
Relative charge of a proton?
+1
Relative charge of a neutron?
0
Relative charge of an electron?
-1
What links the atom of an element to protons?
The number of protons in each atom of an element is called its atomic number e.g. oxygen’s atomic number = 8, therefore it has 8 protons and electrons (atomic number = bottom number)
What is the mass number?
The amount of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Top number on periodic table
Do atoms of the same element have the same number of protons (and hence electrons) in their atoms?
Yes
What is an ion?
An ion is formed when an atom loses or gains electrons (an ion is a charged atom or group of atoms)
12 Which is the mass number and atomic number
C (and which do you use to calculate relative formula mass)?
6
12= mass number (top number)
6= atomic number (bottom number)
You use the mass/top number to calculate RFM/Mr
What is an isotope?
Atom/atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons
They have the same atomic number but different mass numbers
May be radioactive due to unstable nucleus
What does the atomic number show?
Number of protons and electrons
