Y8 Test Acids And Alkalis Flashcards
Name some uses of acids
Tea, batteries, fertilisers
What are corrosive acids?
The acid can destroy skin and attack metals if spilled
What are dilute acids?
Acids that have water added to them
Are dilute acids corrosive?
No, but they may be irritant (could cause red and blistered skin)
What are acids in food like?
They are extremely weak and dilute
What acid is in our stomach and why?
Hydrochloric acid- helps digest food and kills bacteria
What do all alkalis have in common?
Hydrogen particles
What do most cleaning products we use contain?
An alkali
What feeling does the alkali in washing products give?
A soapy feeling
Can alkalis be more dangerous than acids
Yes, they are often more dangerous, because of them being hard to rinse off due to the soapiness
What is an indicator?
An indicator is a substance that has different colours in an acid and in an alkali
Some uses of indicators?
Swimming pools should be kept around neutral (checked with indicators). Indicators are used to check that industry waste is not acidic or alkaline, and gardeners use it to check their soil, so the plants can survive in type of soil they like best
What are the colours for litmus acid?
Red for acid and blue for alkali
Name the colours for universal indicator
Red/orange/yellow/green= acidic (green the least red the most)
Green/blue/purple= alkaline (green the least purple the most)
They both have green, but for acid, it is yellowy and for alkaline it is slightly blue
What are the pH numbers?
Neutral are pH 7
Acidic solutions are lower the pH 7
Alkaline solutions are higher than pH 7
