Year 10 Chemistry Flashcards
what is an atom?
Atoms are the particles (protons, neutrons and electrons) in an element.
what is a periodic table?
The periodic table is a table with elements and is arranged into columns and rows. The periodic table is arranged in order of increasing atomic number.
what are the columns called?
what are the groups called?
what are valence electrons?
Valence electrons are in the outer shell. The group number tells us the number of valence electrons.
what are electrons?
Electrons are found on the outer shells of the atom, with a negative charge.
what are protons?
Protons are found in the atomic nucleus of every element, with a positive charge.
what are neutrons?
Neutrons are found in the atomic nucleus, with a neutral charge (no charge).
what is an element?
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into another substance.
what is a molecule?
A molecule is a group of two or more atoms held together, know as chemical bonds.
what is a compound?
A compound is a substance made up of different elements joined together.
what is atomic mass?
Atomic mass is the mass of an atom. The mass number is calculated by adding protons and neutrons.
what is an atomic number?
what is an electron shell?
why are noble gases unreactive?
