YCJA
Youth Criminal Justice system, deals with young offenders
Community service
A possible consequence for commiting crimes, involves giving service to the public (i.e trash cleanup, painting houses/community centers, etc)
Criminal record
Documentation of someones involvement with the Justice system (young offenders can usually avoid them)
The three R’s
Rehabilitation, Reintegration, Restoration.
Rehabilitation
The process of changing the behaviors of a young offender
Reintegration
The process of moving a young offender back into society
Restoration
The process of restoring everything to how it was before the crime took place (or as close as possible)
Charter
A legal document of of rights and freedoms
Collective rights
Rights given to everyone who lives in Canada
Collective identity
A persons sense of belonging in a group
Youth Justice committee
Give advice to a young offender currently going through the legal process
Sequester
The act of taking legal possessions until a debt has been repaid
Official language community
Groups of people whose main language is not the majority of language spoken in their territory
Rights when arrested
- Right to remain silent
- right to speak to a parent or guardian
- right to have a parent or guardian present during questioning
- right to have a lawyer present if required to go to court
