Yalta conference Flashcards
Where did it take place?
In Yalta near the Black Sea.
What were the dates?
4th - 11th February 1945.
Who were present?
The same “Big Three” that were present in Tehran.
What were it’s aims?
To make decisions to tie off loose ends about the war and clean up the mess that was created around the world.
Name the agreements?
All agreed on five key points:
1: Stalin agreed to send Russian troops to join Americans once Hitler had been defeated
2: Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to a communist government in Poland
3: They created the “Declaration of Liberated Europe” which committed the USSR, Britain and America to work for democracy in Europe
4: The Allies created the UN, an organisation committed to maintaining worldwide peace.
5: They restated their agreement that the USSR should have a “Sphere of influence” in Eastern Europe.
Name the disagreements?
Despite their percepted unity, cracks began to form in the Big Three.
They disagreed on idea of democracy in Europe. Roosevelt believed democracy meant a number of political parties competing to win the people’s support.
Stalin believed that democracy basically meant communism as apparently only communism represented working people’s rights.
Conference was only a partial success because of Roosevelt’s readiness to compromise with Stalin.
