Y9 Waves Flashcards
What are the two types of waves?
Transverse and Longitude.
What is a wave?
A vibration that transfers energy from place to place without matter being transferred.
What is a wavelength or oscillation?
The distance between successive peaks or troughs of a wave.
What is amplitude?
The maximum extent of a vibration or oscillation.
What is a peak and what is a trough?
A peak is the highest point in a wave.
A trough is the lowest point in a wave.
What is a time period?
The time for one complete wavelength to happen or oscillation.
What is frequency?
The amount of oscillations that happen per second.
How can you work out frequency?
Frequency (Hz) = 1 [divided by] Time Period (s)
What is the wave speed?
The speed at which a wave travels.
How do you work out wave speed?
Wave Speed (m/s) = Distance (m) [divided by] time (s) Or Wave Speed (m/s) = Frequency (Hz) [times by] wavelength (m)
How fast does sound travel?
340 meters per second (m/s)
What is infrasound?
Sound lower than the frequency 20Hz (the normal limit of human hearing)
What is ultrasound?
Sound higher than the frequency 20,000Hz (the normal limit of human hearing)
