Y9 topic 1 Flashcards
What is a atom
Smallest part of a element
What is a molecule
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together that form a substance
Compound
A substance made from two or more substances chemically bonded together in a fixed ratio
Element
Pure substance made from 1 type of atom
Electron
Subatomic particle with a negative charge and a negligible (almost no mass) mass relative to protons and neutrons
Proton
Subatomic particle with a positive charge and a relative mass of 1. relative charge of a proton is +1.
Neutron
Uncharged subatomic particle with a mass of 1 relative to a proton. Relative charge of a neutron is 0
What is a solution
A solution is made when a substance dissolves into a liquid. The liquid is called the solvent. The substance that has been dissolved is called the solute
What is a solvent
The liquid in a solution which dissolves the solute. For example, the solvent in sea water is water
What is a solute
The solid or occasionally a gas which dissolves into a solvent liquid in order to make a solution. For example the main solute in sea water is sodium chloride
What is a product
A reaction finishes when one of the reactants is all used up. The other reactant has nothing left to react with, so some of it is left over
What is a ballenced equation
A balanced symbol equation has the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the arrow
Miscible
Liquids that can not mix
Imisible
Liquids that can mix
Evaporation
When liquid gains energy and becomes a gas (can happen at any temperatures)
