What were the 3 long-term causes of WW1
Nationalism, militarism and Imperialism
What is Nationalism?
Nationalism is the fact that people are feeling especially passionate and felt proud of their country. They thought best way to prove your country is take it to war.
What is Militarism?
Each country wanted the best military they could and would spend lots of money on their military. When tensions were high it was tempting o prove their armies.
What is Imperialism?
Imperialism was when countries wanted to expand their empire so there was a big race to take over other countries.
What are duckboards?
Wooden slats placed to stop the troops sinking in the mud.
What are dugouts?
Rooms dug out of the back wall of trenches.
What was the Treaty of Versailles?
It was a treaty that said Germany must take full responsibility for starting WW1.
What were the main terms of the Treaty of Versailles?
Germany must pay a massive sum of money, drastically cut down their forces, not allowed in the League of Natio s and that Britain and France could take over German Colonies.
What was the short-term cause of the WW1?
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Why did they expect the war to be over by Christmas?
They didn’t expect Belgium, to put up a big fight, The British expeditionary Force held the Germans back, and the Russian army mobilised quickly.
What new weapons were implemented in the first world war?
Machine, guns and artillery.
