Y9 Physics Flashcards
Mass
The amount of matter in an object. Measured in kilograms
Weight
The force acting on an object with mass due to gravity. Measured in Newtons, N
Force
A push or pull on an object caused by its interaction with another object.
Elastic Deformation
An object undergoing elastic deformation will return to its original shape and length when the forces applied are removed.
Inelastic Deformation
An object undergoing inelastic deformation will not return to its original shape or length when the forces applied are removed.
Limit of Proportionality
The point at which the force applied to an elastic object is no longer directly proportional to the extension
Dissipated
Energy is dissipated when it is transferred to a non-useful store
Work Done
Energy transferred between stores
Conservation
Is something is conserved (like energy or charge) it cannot be created nor destroyed; only transferred
Power
The rate of energy transferred/work done
Electrical Current
The flow of charge around a complete circuit
Coulomb
The coulomb, C, is the unit of charge
Potential Difference
The work done/energy transferred per unit charge
Electrical Field
A region where a force acts on a charged particle
Vector
A quantity which has both a magnitude and direction
Scalar
A quantity which only has a magnitude but no direction
Displacement
The straight-line distance and direction from an object’s starting and finishing position
Velocity
The speed and direction of an object
Acceleration
The change in velocity in a certain amount of time
