Where are the Vaishyas in the caste system?
In third. (Not very important)
What do the Brahmins have and what do they work as?
Brahmins have the best education and they work as teachers or priests.
What do the Kshatryas do?
They protect the brahmins.
What do Vaishyas do and work as?
They give sacrifices and normally work as farmers.
What are Shudras?
They are peasants.
What are Dalits treated as?
Slaves.
When does a Hindu funeral take place?
On the same day as the death so the body won’t be contaminated.
How long is the period of mourning?
10 days.
Who can be buried?
Children under the age of puberty, pregnant woman, and people admired as saints.
What is the role of the eldest son at the funeral?
To walk round the pyre three times then light it on fire.
What happens during the period of mourning?
The body is told prays to make the soul better.
Who prepares the body and how is it prepared?
A woman prepares the body for a female and a man prepares the body for a male. The body is wrapped in clothes to symbolise getting rid of old.
What is the funeral pyre?
It is a bonfire that the body is placed on.
Which way is the body placed?
To the south to represent the god of death.
What is puja?
Puja is a daily worship usually done in the morning.
What is the bell used for in puja?
It is used to let the deity know that worship is about to begin.
What is the dish filled with sandal wood used for in puja?
To mark the worshipers forehead to show devotion.
What are the food offerings for in puja?
To symbolise exchanges of love between the worshiper and the deity.
What is the holy water used for in puja?
It is used for cleansing and purification.
What is incense used for in puja?
It is used to purify and cleanse the air and create a holy atmosphere.
What is the arti lamp used for in puja?
It is used to represent each element. (fire, water, earth, air, and ether) Fire can be used to communicate with a deity.
Does Hinduism have a god?
Yes they have one god but in many forms. They call a god ‘a Brahman.’
What is samsara?
The cycle of life.
What is moksha?
Hindu Heaven.
What does Ahimsa mean?
No violence.
What is karma?
It is the thought that if you do something good, something good will happen back and if you do something, bad something bad will happen back.
