Y7 Chemistery Revision Flashcards
name the five characteristics of a Liquid.
The particles have a random arrangement
They are close together-there are no gaps
They do not have a fixed shape as the particles can flow over each other
They have a fixed volume
They cannot be compressed (squashed) as there are no spaces between the particles
The process of a Solid turning into a liquid is called…
Melting
The process of a liquid turning into a gas is called…
Evaporating/boiling
The process of a gas turning into a liquid is called..
condensing
The process of a liquid turning into a solid is called..
freezzing
Name the four characteristics of a gas
The particles have a random arrangment
They are far apart from each other and there are lots of gaps
They do not have a fixed shape as the particles can flow over each other
They can be compressed (squashed) as there are spaces between the particles.
What is the melting point for water?
0 degrees Celsius
what is the boiling point for water?
100 degrees Celsius
What is a pure substance?
Substances where there is only one type of molecule
What is a Impure Substance?
Substances where there are more than one molecule
What is diffusion?
It is the movement of particles from a high concentration,to a low concentration, down the concentration gradient, until an equal concentration is reached
what happens to the particles in a gas?
they move quickly in all directions and bump into each other and the walls of the container
what happens when a gas particle hits the walls of the container?
It causes pressure. The more particles that hit the wall, the higher the pressure.
What happens to the particles in a gas if the container is squashed?
The particles are forced closer together and have less space to move in so they hit the walls of the container more often.this increases gas pressure.
When happens to the particles in a gas if it is heated up?
The particles move around more quickly. They hit the walls of their container harder and more often. This increases the pressure.
