Y11 PPE 1 Revision Flashcards
What is ‘Design for disassembly’?
Where a new product is designed so it can be easily taken apart at the end of its lifetime - so it parts and materials can be reused or recycled.
What is planned obsolescene?
Where the product is designed to have a short lifespan and become useless quickly.
Why can the continuous development of new products be bad?
Because it can encourage consumers to replace existing products with new ones, which causes a carbon footprint.
The new products and packaging being eventually disposed of can result in the increased usage of finite resources and environmental damage.
What are the 6R’s?
Repair
Re-use
Recycle
Rethink
Reduce
Refuse
What is the weight of paper and board measured in?
gsm - (grams per square metre)
What does solid white board have?
A high quality bleached surface, which allows for printing.
What is corrugated card made up of?
A fluted inner core that is ideal for printing, and adds strength and rigity.
What does duplex board have?
A different colour and texture on each side, where one side is smooth for printing.
Where do softwoods grow?
Colder climates and are fast growing - makes them cheap and readily accessible.
Where do hardwoods grow?
Warm climates and are slow growing - more expensive than softwood.
What do ferrous metals contain?
Iron
What is often applied to ferrous metals to prevent rusting?
Protective coatings such as paint.
Do non-ferrous metals rust?
No
What are the two types of plastics (polymers)?
Thermoforming and thermosetting plastics.
What are properties of thermoforming plastics?
-Don’t resist heat well; easily formed into different shapes by heating, melting and remoulding.
-Easy to recycle.
What are the properties of acrylic?
-Hard, stiff and shiny.
-Weather resistant
-Used to make signs (Fire exit signs)
What are the properties and uses of high density polyethylene?
-Stiff,strong but lightweight.
-Used for baskets, folding chairs.
What are properties of thermosetting plastics?
-Resistant to heat and fire
-When moulded, become permanently hard and rigid.
-Non recyclable
What do smart materials do?
Change their properties in response to stimuli.
What are shape memory alloys?
Alloys that remember their original shape. (Can be returned to original shape when heated above a certain temperature).
What do photochromic pigments do?
Change colour reversibly in response to light.
What are thermochromic pigments and inks used in?
Colour changing products - They react to temperature. (Baby feeding spoons, mugs - denisdaily)
When the temperature changes the product changes colour, then changes back when the object returns to it’s original temperature.
Why should card based food packaging be printable on?
So the customer can see the advertising and nutritional information for what they are buying.
Why does corrugated card have to be waterproof and airtight?
To prevent the food inside from going bad.
Why is corrugated card used for pizza packaging?
It is strong enough to withstand other boxes being stacked ontop of it, and is thick so is good at retaining heat, keeping the pizza warm.
What are standard components?
Parts that come ready-made for use.
What do split pins do?
Join pieces of paper and card together as movable joints.
What do laser cutting machines use to cut out designs accuratley?
CAD (Computer aided manufacture)
What is die cutting used for?
Cutting and creasing nets, to produce nets for packaging .
What happens in die cutting?
The die is mounted on a strong plywood base and pressed down onto the card.
What is an advantage and a disadvantage of die-cutting?
You can cut though many different materials at a time, so you can make lots of nets very quickly.
It is expensive.
What does lithography and offset lithography use?
Oily ink and water, since they don’t mix.
How is the image printed on in lithography?
The image is printed from the metal plate onto a series of rollers (cylinders), which is then reversed or corrected as it is printed onto paper.
How is the image printed on in offset lithography?
The image is printed onto a rubber ‘blanket’ cylinder which squeezes away the water and transfers the ink to the paper.
Why is lithography and offset lithography good?
They are fast ways of printing, gives you a high-quality product and are great for print runs of 1000 copies or more (books, magazines, newspapers).
What are the four colours used in layers by digital printers?
Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y), Black (K).
CMYK
What is microencapsulation?
Solids, liquids or gasses that are sealed in tiny capsules, and can be released at controlled rates and under controlled conditions.
Whats are the active ingredients used in microencapsulation?
Thermochromic dyes, antibacterial material, pesticides, perfumes.
What products is microencapsulation used in?
Scratch stickers, fragrances and deoderants.
Describe conductive fabrics and threads.
E-textiles allow electricity to travel along special threads which are either woven or sewn into fabrics.
What are conductive fabrics used for?
Gloves you can use your phone with, suits in fencing.
