Xylem and Phloem Flashcards
what is vascular tissue ?
Vascular tissue are bundles of vessels that distribute substances (e.g. Iones and molecules) to various branches, flowers, roots and leaves. The transport may be intracellular or extracellular
What is the function of the Xylem?
The prime function of the xylem is to transport water from roots to shoots and leaves, but it also transports some nutrients.
What does the Xylem consist of?
The xylem consists of supporting tissues and elongated cells, allowing movement from the xylem to the phloem.
In the xylem there are two types of water conductive cells: tracheids and Vessel elements
What are tracheids?
A tracheid is a type of water conducting cell in the xylem which lacks perforations (holes) in the cell wall
What are vessel elements?
Vessel elements are a type of cell found in the xylem and they are typically found in flowering plants
