Xylem Flashcards
What is xylem made up of?
Tracheids and vessels
What type of tissue is xylem?
Dead vascular tissue
What are tracheids?
Long, sloping or tapering cells whose insides are hollow at maturity which overlap
What is the function of pits in tracheids?
They allow water to pass from tracheid to tracheid through thin parts of the walls of them (Pits)
What are vessels?
Tubular structures formed when a number of cells join end-to-end. They are wider than tracheids and their end walls break down to form continuous tubes.
What is the function of pits in vessels?
To allow water to pass from one vessel to another (More efficient at water transport than tracheids)
What is lignin?
A strengthening material found in some plant cell walls
What are the functions of xylem?
Transport of water and mineral salts from the root to the leaves and gives mechanical support to the plant due to lignin
Where can xylem be found?
Found in vascular bundles in roots, stems, leaves and flowers
