Phloem Flashcards
What is phloem made up of?
Sieve tubes and companion cells
What type of tissue is phloem?
Living vascular tissue
What are sieve tubes?
Long tubular structures which form when individual cells join end-to-end
What are sieve plates?
End walls of sieve tubes which have numerous pores in them to allow passage of materials from one element to another
What are sieve plates made of?
Cellulose (No lignin)
What are companion cells?
Cells that accompany each sieve tube which have a nucleus and a dense cytoplasm
What are the functions of phloem?
Sieve tubes transport food made by photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plant and companion cells control the activities of the sieve tubes
Where is phloem located?
In vascular bundles in roots, stems, leaves and flowers
