XII. Limestone Flashcards
a carbonate rock consisting mainly of calcite or aragonite
Limestone
Four kinds of lime are used for agricultural purposes:
(1) High-calcium lime
(2) Magnesian lime
(3) Oyster-shell lime
(4) Hydrated lime
made from burning limestone with 50-55% calcium oxide and 40-55% carbonic acid, containing small %ages of magnesia, silica, iron, and alumina. A lime derived from these raw materials yields 90 to 98% calcium oxide.
High-calcium lime
used in agriculture contains 5-20% magnesia and 70 -85% calcium oxide. A bushel of magnesian lime weighs about 70 pounds; a high-calcium lime, 90-95 pounds.
Magnesian lime
crushed oyster shell that has been calcined and used as agricultural lime or simply aglime
Oyster-shell lime
hydrated calcium oxide, Ca(OH)2, with 24% water
Hydrated lime
