X-ray CT Flashcards
How does X-ray CT work?
CT is an imaging technique whereby cross-sectional images are obtained with the use of X-rays -> “3-D” image made up of slices
Patient is passed through a rotating gantry that has an X-ray tube on one side and a set of detectors on the other.
Information from the detectors is analysed by computer and displayed as a grey-scale image.
What are the advantages of CT?
Much greater array of densities can be displayed than on conventional X-ray films due to computer analysis.
Allows sensitivity to the presence of specific materials such as fat or calcium.
Grey-scale settings may be altered to distinguish between various tissues of the body
What are the disadvantages of CT?
Large ionising radiation dose
Hazards of intravenous contrast material
