SPECT Flashcards
1
Q
How would you describe SPECT to a non-scientist?
A
- SPECT is an example of nuclear medicine which is often used with CT
- A gamma-emitting radionuclide is delivered into a patient, normally via injection
- Radionuclide collects in areas of high metabolic activity (eg. tumour)
- SPECT shows physiology not just anatomy
- Gamma camera is rotated around the patient. Images (projections) of the patient from many angles are collected
- These images are combined using filtered backprojection and iterative techniques to form a 3D image

Q
How can imaging and therapy be combined using SPECT?
A
- Bremsstrahlung SPECT is possible with 90Y as it is a beta-emitter (although resolution is poor). This combines imaging and therapy in one. PET may be a better choice
