Wyatts rebels main motives

A
  • religion, many of Wyatt’s urban supporters coming from Maidstone, a Protestant stronghold
  • xenophobia
  • decline in local cloth industry could have prompted poorer rebels to use the revolt as means if expressing social and economic grievances
  • attracted some gentry who had lost office within the county

28 Jan - Duke of Norfolks force unable to engage the rebels; Norfolk forced to retreat

1 Feb - Queen rallies support with a speech at guildhall in city of london

3 Feb - CRITICAL TURNING POINT - rebels reach Southwark but prevented from going over London Bridge

6 Feb - Rebels move back towards london through Thames

7 Feb - Rebels stop at Ludgate on the edge of the City of London, Wyatt surrenders

Why was Wyatt’s rebellion significant ?

A
  • even though Protestants in minority, religious opinions could not be ignored
  • showed extent to popular suspicion of proposed Spanish marriage
  • resulted in execution of Lady Jane Grey (innocent victim of her fathers support for the rebellion)
  • Wyatt came close to securing city of london
