WWII Flashcards
Ethnic Groups
Japanese Americans
Executive Order 9066 moves japanese to Internment camps away from the coast to make sure they can’t impact the war effort for the Japanese. Most japanese lose their property, leaving upwards of 110,000 people displaced. long standing trend of US violating civil rights of people during war, like the Alien and Sedition acts.
Propaganda
Not as much as before. Didn’t need a lot of support because we were attacked.
Production
War production ends the depression. No matter how much spending from the New Deal, it didn’t solve the depression. only war prodcution and building up the military did it go away. Increases demands up to 100 billion of productoin in 1942. People are more willing to build whatever the president/boards say. Could build a large ship in 1-2 weeks. Able to replace arms faster than they are destroyed
Farming
Having to feed those across the sea, with better tech/fertilizers, farming hits a high mark. Food is scarce so prices rise. There’s not a lot to spend money on, so people start saving.
Labor
War Labor Board places ceilings on raises, and helps keep business prices down.
Smith-Connally Enti-Strike act 1943 makes sure no unions had strike pledges, and that the war is essential and more important.
Women
Most women who worked in WWI were already working and stayed after the war. After WWII 2/3 of women go back home after the war is over. 6 million were employed in jobs regarding building of war machines. United Service Organization were the main jobs for women at bases throughout the world, where they would organize dances, social events for men on leave to keep up moral. See the impact of women in the war on their daughters as it broadens their horizons of work.
