Split over Pro-business Taft and TR and the Progressive party/Bull moose party. Fights for women’s suffrage, social welfare, minimum wage, and social insurance. Argues trusts and monopolies are okay because it creates easier organization and regulation of monopolies

Woodrow Wilson supports the New Freedom plan, a graduated income tax, inheritance tax, primary elections for the presidency. Aggressive against turst musting, allows smaller companies to regulate themselves.

Tariff

A

Wants to reduce the tariff. Goes to the people instead of the republicans. Tells them the high tariff is bad, leading them to pass the Underwood Tariff bill 1913. Passes a graduated income tax, because theirs less of a need for a tariff if the waelthy are paying apart of their income

Banks

A

wants to take power away from bank. Federal Resrve act 1913, Sets up a structure for the people. Board of members can now issue paper money in times of need. Distributes it to banks that can loan other banks to make currency more available. Gives public control over banks.

A

Clayton Anti-trust act 1914 expands the list of unfair business practices like interlocking directorates, and super holding companies. Exempts unions unlike the Sherman-Anti Trust act 1890

Aid to poor

A

Working Man’s compensation act 1916 for injuries on the job. Attempts to end child labor, but is struck down b the supreme court in the Keating Owens act 1916. Succeeds in getting 89 hour work day for railroad workers. Gives easier credit to farmers.

A

Wilson was a massive racist. Accelerated segregation. Refused to meet with African Americans. Apoints conservatives to federal reserve board, who didn’t make business more accountable like meant to.

Mexico

A

General Victoriano Huerta 1913 takes over Mexico and scares US investors. Woodrow supports Huerta’s rivals, Poncho Villa and Venustiano Carranza to take him out of power. Carranza takes control, not wanting to start a war with US. Germany was supplying them with weapons, creating tension with them. Germans don’t want US getting involved in their war, so they wanted to keep the US occupied

Poncho Villa

A

Mad that the US supported Carranza, he retaliates by attacking the US to try to start a war. Kill 35 Americans. General John Black Jack Pershing is sent to capture him, but they pull out because of WWI.

Central Powers Vs. Allies

A

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary killed by serbain national. Sets off chain reaction of secret treaties, created by Otto Von Bismarck, so all of Europe is involved.
Central powers= Austria/Hungary, Germany, Turkey, Bulgaria
Alies= Japan, Italy, Great Britain, US, Russia, France

Neutrality

A

Starts with Neutrality, from the Neutrality Proclamation from GW, but German attacks Neutral Belgium to attack France. Allies start buying from the US, strengthening our economy.

Lusitania 1915

A

German U-Boat used to harass british ships shot the lusitania and were sunk, killing US citizens. Creates more tension and incentive to join the war.

Sussex pledge 1916

A

Germany was blockaded by British ships. Germany says they’ll agree to take the Sussex pledge in 1916, saying they would stop torpedoing merchant ships if the US tries to get the blockade to stop. They laugh in Germany’s face

Republicans= Charles Evans Hues. Supreme court justice. Progressives vote for him. Condems the democratic Freedom plan against tariff, banks and trusts. He and TR want to go to war
