The outbreak of WWII
1 September 1939, Hitler invaded Poland from the West.
He justified this with propaganda claiming Poland was persecuting Jews.
Britain and France agreed to provide military support if Germany attacked Poland.
So both countries became involved 2 days later.
On 17 September Soviet troops invaded Poland from the East.
Describe the main events of WWII
The biggest and deadliest war in History, involving more than 30 countries.
Lasted 6 years- between 1939-1945.
Fought over 6 continents.
More than 50 million men, woman and children were killed.
To explain why the British won The Battle of Britain
Took place between the 10th July and the 31st October.
The first battle to be fought in the skies.
Between the Britain’s Royal Airforce (RAF) and Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe .
They battled for control of the airspace.
British used the Spitfire and the Hurricane.
Germans used the Messerschmitt BF 109
Britain had a highly effective air defence network - The Dowding System
Was the use of he Atomic Bomb justified?

Explain the significance of the Holocaust and why it should be remembered?
Hitler was responsible for this.
There were long trains of cattle cars, that went full of people, that returned empty
Jews were sent to the gas chambers.
What was Blitzkrieg used by the Germans?
Germany used a method of fighting called Blitzkrieg (lightning war)
The Polish Army were defeated in a week.
Blitzkrieg involved fast moving columns of tanks.
Supported by infantry soldiers and dive-bomber attacks.
Parachutists were dropped behind enemy lines the night before.
They destroyed strongholds and cut telephone wires.
