Q

Why did the Treaty of Versailles fail?

A

Treaty of Versailles failed because it demanded annexation of German territories and the creation of many states which sowed the seeds of bitterness and conflict. The unjust treatment and humiliation faced by Germany made them want to rise in the spirit of revenge which was only possible by an aggressive policy of armaments and hence war was inevitable.

China appealed to the League of Nations to declare economic sanctions against Japan. The ruling countries of the League of Nations, Britain and France did not listen to this request.

In 1933 Japan left the League of Nations and started annexing British and American colonies in China. Britain and France again followed the policy of appeasement and did not provide any help thinking that doing so may weaken China.
