Define Nationalism?
Nationalism refers to the sense of unity felt by people who share common history, language and culture.
What is Aggressive nationalism and how did it start?
The feeling of unity due to Nationalism soon turned into extreme pride which made people of many countries believe their country is superior to others. This lead to the development of love for one’s nation and hatred of other nations. People started thinking about only their own national interests and did not care about the interests of other nations. Territories developed expansionist policies in the name of nationalism, military strength became synonymous with national prestige. This was known as aggressive nationalism.
What were the National interests of France, Italy, Balkans
France- wanted its provinces of Alsace, Lorraine from Germany
Italy- wanted its territory of Trentino and Trieste from Austria
Balkan- the Balkan states such as Serbia wanted their fellow nationals (Slavs) who lived in other states would come together to form a greater Balkan state
What is Imperialism?
Imperialism is defined as the state policy or practice by which a powerful nation establishes its control over other nations either by direct political acquisition or by gaining political and economical control.
What happened to the country under the control of an imperial nation?
- Once conquered the country would be claimed as a colony.
- Colonies were governed by a representative of the imperial nation or by a puppet government.
- Their resources such as raw materials, cheap labour, agricultural land, trading ports were exploited by the imperial nation
- Markets for their finished products
Short note on British Imperialism?
It mas majorly focused on maintaining and expanding trade by exploiting resources from India Sri Lanka Myanmar and Egypt.
Their power was reinforced by her powerful and the world’s largest navy.

Austria Hungarian empire was ruled by the Hapsburg Dynasty of Austria and consisted of Croat, Serb, Bosnian, Hungarian populations.
Russian Empire consists of Polish, Turkish, Mongolian, Ukrainian populations
Formation of Triple alliance and Triple Entente
Germany entered into an Alliance with Austria- Hungaria. in 1882, Italy joined this alliance and it came to be known as Triple Alliance.
After the death of Bismarck, France established friendly relations with Britain and the Russian empire. This came to be known as Triple Entente. in 1907 Japan joined the Triple Entente.
What caused political divide leading to world war 1.
The concept of nationalism lead to the concept of imperialism and aggressive nationalism. This lead to fierce economic competition filling the air with fear apprehension, mutual hatred and international tension. This lead to rivalries between nations based on trade as well as trade routes. The people believed the only way international problems could be solved was through militarism. This lead to a political divide in Europe which flagged off World War 1.
