A

Nationalism refers to the sense of unity felt by people who share common history, language and culture.

What is Aggressive nationalism and how did it start?

A

The feeling of unity due to Nationalism soon turned into extreme pride which made people of many countries believe their country is superior to others. This lead to the development of love for one’s nation and hatred of other nations. People started thinking about only their own national interests and did not care about the interests of other nations. Territories developed expansionist policies in the name of nationalism, military strength became synonymous with national prestige. This was known as aggressive nationalism.

A

France- wanted its provinces of Alsace, Lorraine from Germany
Italy- wanted its territory of Trentino and Trieste from Austria
Balkan- the Balkan states such as Serbia wanted their fellow nationals (Slavs) who lived in other states would come together to form a greater Balkan state

Formation of Triple alliance and Triple Entente

A

Germany entered into an Alliance with Austria- Hungaria. in 1882, Italy joined this alliance and it came to be known as Triple Alliance.

After the death of Bismarck, France established friendly relations with Britain and the Russian empire. This came to be known as Triple Entente. in 1907 Japan joined the Triple Entente.

What caused political divide leading to world war 1.

A

The concept of nationalism lead to the concept of imperialism and aggressive nationalism. This lead to fierce economic competition filling the air with fear apprehension, mutual hatred and international tension. This lead to rivalries between nations based on trade as well as trade routes. The people believed the only way international problems could be solved was through militarism. This lead to a political divide in Europe which flagged off World War 1.

  1. Germany was guilty for aggression
  2. Germany was forced to pay for the losses and damages during war. The cost of reparations was fixed to 33 billion dollars. Germany had to cede her merchant ships to the Allies and supply large amounts of coal to Belgium, France, Italy for 10 yrs
  3. Area of Rhine valley was demilitarized and Allied powers were to occupy west of Rhine for next 15 years
  4. Germany ceded Alsace, Lorraine to France; Eupen-et-Malmedy to Belgium, Danzig to Poland, Schleswig to Denmark.
