Four main causes of WWI (explain each).
Militarism - Glorified arm strength, led to euro countries to prep for war.
Alliances - Alliance system divided Europe.
Imperialism - Led to fighting for materials and markets.
Nationalism - Strengthened militarism, caused people to blindly follow military leaders.
First six events of the war.
- Gavrilo Princip assassinates Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife Sophie.
- Austria-Hungary Declares war on Serbia.
- Russia mobilizes its army to protect the south Slavic people.
- Germany declares war on Russia because it mobilizes its troops for war.
- Germany declares war on France because it was allied with Russia.
- Germany marches through Belgium to attack France. (The Schlieffen Plan)
- Great Britain declares war on Germany because it attacked Belgium, a neutral country.
Results of trench warfare.
War of attribution, extreme sickness and disease amongst soldiers.
Role the colonies played in the war and why.
Assisted imperial powers in hopes of gaining independence.
War on western front versus the eastern front.
Western front - frontline barley moved.
Eastern front - frontline moved large distances.
Describe the reason Russia pulled out of WWI.
To fight their own revolution. Also generally ill-equipped from lack of industrialization.
Why did England and France push for the Treaty of Versailles?
Wanted to punish Germany and weaken them as a threat.
Describe Russia just prior to and in the early parts of WWI.
Strong disparity between rich and poor, not industrialized, poor leadership. There were some rev’s, overall ineffective.
What are some of the first actions Lenin took after overthrowing the Provisional government?
Pulled out of Great War, redistributed land, eliminated provisional government.
Describe the two sides of the Russian Civil War. What was each side fighting for?
Reds - the Bolsheviks fought for communism.
Whites - Anti-communist, wanted Russia back in war, included allies.
Social democratic party of Germany, and describe the fear of the German middle class.
Disliked radical communist, signed peace treaty.
Describe Treaty of Versailles versus the Fourteen Points.
Fourteen points was an attempt at peace amongst nations while Treaty of Versailles was a direct jab at Germany.
