What war fronts did Germany face at the beginning of WWI? Why?
- Russia to east, France to west.
- So they could quickly strike France then move to Russia
Explain how Germany’s path to invading France backfired.
Germany tried to make a quick neutral strike on Belgium to get to France, but it led to Great Britain declaring war on Germany
The US maintained a stance of neutrality. What does that mean, and why is it beneficial?
- It means that America did not support either side in the war.

Germany wanted to quickly defeat France and then move east to fight Russia. It was not successful because the quick strike into neutral Belgium led the quick attack on France to not happen. Became a bloody stalemate
Fighting on the western front became a stalemate. Explain what the western front was and why it was a stalemate.
- series of trenches along the Aisne River
- it was because both sides were stuck in trenches so it was almost impossible to kill enemies and gain land
Explain the concept of no man’s land, and why it existed.
An area of land where no man has territory of. If you were seen there you were dead. It existed so opposing armies could meet without hostility.

- Flamethrowers, Machine guns, Big bertha artillery guns, Tanks, Airplanes, Zeppelins, Grenades, Poison gas, etc.
- They used some of these new weapons to avoid/get through stalemate.

What was unrestricted submarine warfare? Why did Germany incorporate it during WWI? What impact did it have?
- USW was how they attacked civilian ships with submarines
- They believed that they were carrying weapons that could be used against them
- Attacked any of the ships traveling around Great Britain
- GB made blockades

How did the American government try to encourage the citizens to support the war effort? Explain how American society changed.
They used liberty bonds. The War Industries Board told factories what military equipment to produce and the citizens took care of food and other goods for them.
Explain what the Sedition Act was, why it was passed. Do you think it was justified enough why/why not?
The Sedition Act said that people could be fined or put into jail for interfering with war efforts or saying something not wanted by the government about them or the war effort. It targeted the government socialists, and labor leaders. No, because it went against the 1st amendment and it convicted about 1000 people for just saying something.
