He was an Archduke and was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Why was Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo?
Bosnia was part of Austria-Hungary

Sophie.
It was their wedding anniversary.
When did Bosnia become part of Austria-Hungary? How did people feel about that?
Bosnia was conquered by Austro-Hungary in 1908.
Many Bosnians were still deeply unhappy about this. They wanted to join their neighbours, Serbia, and many Serbians wanted Bosnia to join with them.
Who were the BLACK HAND GANG?
A gang of Serbians who decided to assassinate the Archduke.
Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were both killed by a member of the black hand gang—Gavrilo Princip.

28th July:
Austria-Hungary blames Serbia for killing the Archduke.

Russia.
They had promised to protect Serbia against attack.

1st August:
Germany, which supports Austria-Hungary, hears about Russian preparations for war. Germany declares war on Russia.

What did Germany do on 3rd August and why?
3rd August: Germany, which is more worried about the French army than the Russians, decides to attack France first. It declares war on France, hoping to defeat the French quickly and then move on to face the Russians.
What two significant things which concern Belgium happened on 4th August?
4th August: Germany asks Belgium to allow its soldiers to march through Belgium to attack France. Belgium says no but Germany marches through anyway.
