What does the word COLONY mean?
Land settled by and under the control of people from another country.
What are MERCHANT SHIPS?
Ships carrying goods and materials, not part of a state’s navy.
What are the BALKANS?
An area in south-east Europe that included: Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Herzegovina, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia Turkey.
What is PATRIOTISM?
Love for your own country.
What was the ARMS RACE?
A competition between countries for the development and production of weapons.
What is an ALLIANCE?
An agreement between countries that benefits each of them.
What does ANNEX mean?
Seizing an area of land and making it part of your country.
What is a BATTALION?
A fighting unit of up to 1,000 men.
What is CONSCRIPTION?
Forcing people to join the army, rather than relying on people volunteering.
What was the WESTERN FRONT?
The zone of fighting that stretched from Switzerland to the English Channel.
Who or what was the ALLIED FORCES?
British troops and those of Britain’s allies.
What was BOMBARDMENT?
A continuous attack with shells (shelling), intended to destroy trench defences, especially barbed wire.
What does the word MUTINY mean?
When soldiers or sailors rebel and refuse to follow orders.
