Who was William Lyon mackenzie king? Describe him.

A

William king was the PM of Canada during WW2, his leadership helped Canada become a respected member of the international community. King helped mobilized Canadian resources, enacted conscription and implemented policies to help the military and home front. He also helped Canada play a key role in the Allied powers. He helped Canada contribute to the battle of atlantic and liberation of Europe in which the Allied won.

What was one of the main causes of WW2

A

The Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. Adolf hitler wanted to expand german territory and power in Europe. He invaded Poland which broke the Treaty of versailles, which led to Britan and France declaring war on Germany.

The Nazi-Soviet pact agreed to split poland and not fight, Poland does not want to be split, Hitler invades, Britan, france, Canada declare war on germany.

Who was mussolini?

A

Mussolini was a fascist dictator, he was extremely nationalistic and dictative. He wanted to expand Italys territory which caused him to align with Nazi germany and supported Hitlers idea of a fascist government. He entered the war on the Axis side, however his military campaigns were unsuccessful which led to him being executed in 1945.

Axis powers was a coalition of countries led by the Nazi germany. It included Germany, Imperial Japan and Fascist Italy. They often battled against the Allied. They aimed to expand territory and promote fascism, imperialism, and militarism.

He was a dictator of the Nazi party and Nazi germany. he promotoed facism and racist ideas. He orchestrated the holocaust killing 6 million jews, advertising the aryan race and germans as superior and jews as the enemy. He infiltratetd many pacts such as the molotov-ribbentrop. His goal was to expand greater german empire (third reich) and take over europe then eventually the world. DIed by suicide in april 30 1945.

What was appeasement?

A

Appeasement was a policy Britan, france and Canada took towards germany in the 1930’s. Britan and France would give i to hitlers requests as long as they were REASONABLE and PREVENTED war. AN example of this can be the Munich agreement in 1938. Hitler was given permission to take over sudetenland in Czech as long as he tried nothing more. France wanted to protect Czech and britan placed pressure on Czech to avoid war.

Isolationists believed ww2 was a dispute btw foreign countries and that US has no good reason to get involved. Instead they should build their own forced and remain neutral. A

A political ideology, usually led by a single dictator with extremely nationalistic and authoritarian values. Usually totalitarian. Fascist government promote expansionism and militarism. They prioritize the interests of a singular nation or ethnic group over individual human rights. Propaganda is used to control the publics ideas.

Eg, the axis power (japan, italy, germany) and the Nazi’s were heavily fascist.

Agreement that allowed hitler to take pver Sudetenland (claimed most ppl living there wanted to be apart of germany). Leaders agree as long as he stops there. Hitler don’t care abt agreement and invades all of Czech. Britan claims they will fight if he invades poland (which he did in 1939)

A

The rhineland was a strip of land inside germany which bordered france, belgium and netherlands. It was de-militarized by Germany as a clause of the TOV. In 1936, Hitler re-militarized it unknowing of how the allies would react, he was trying to take back the clauses of TOV.

What was the Miracle at Dunkirk?

A

Also known, Rescue mission of British and french citizens and troops on dunkirk beach. Small motor boats were used to evacuate citizens. Germans had better equipment, used destroyers and air forces. Canada contributed by the royal canadian navy sending canadian vessels and ships to transport troops thro the english channel bak to england. They also provided air cover and protection of evacuation boats. Despite being surrounded by german forced 338,000 ppl were saved and boosted british morale.

The Battle of Britain

A

Located in southern england, it was a major air campaign fought by the RAF and luftwaffe. First military campaign fought by solely air forces. German forces wanted air superiority over britain in preparation for their invasion plan, Operation sea lion. Despite the RAF being outnumbered they used effective defense techniques such as radar and fighter aircraft. Blitz was a term used when German airforces starting intensifying bombing on english cities. RAF repelled causing hitler to abandon operation sea lion, turning point in war as showed hitler britain can resist Nazi’s. Canadian pilots supported britan and also sent supplies and resources

Dieppe raid

A

A disastrous amhibious attack on the german occupied seaport of dieppe france. On august 19th 1942, Operation jubilee was put into play. Canadian troops were transported thro the english channel. Before they could reach the shore, they were getting killed and even more as they tried to cross the pebble as dieppe was heavily fortified. The purpose of the raid was to gather info on the german defenses. Canadians were told to retreat and out of the 5,000 sent about 2000 returned. The rest killed, wounded or imprisoned. Massive failure for the allied and Canadian, victory for German forces.

A

Battle over control of atlantic, Allied against german forces. Longest continuous campaign in ww2, sep 1939- may 1945. Allied used supplies and men from NA which canada transported thro air forces and naval vessels. Germany wanted to cut this supply chain. Allied used the convoy system which was sending merchant ships across atlantic tg for protection. Also protected by air forces. Germany tried sinking merchant ships w U boats and subs. Allied won.

A

Code name for german invasion of soviet union, largest military operation. Germanys objectives were to conquer soviet territory, defeat the soviet army and get resources like oil and agricultural land. It failed massively for Nazi, as the war was stalled due to harsh soviet winters. The red army launched a counteroffensive which pushed back german forces leading to the defeat. June-Dec 1941

It was the largest amphibious invasion in military history, occured on june 6th 1944 normandy france and was a huge turning point in the war as it marked the beginning of the liberation of Nazi. Purpose was to liberate normandy france of Nazis. The allied forces landed on 5 main beach heads. Omaha beach was appointed to the US forces and Juno beach was appointed to Canadian forces which they eventually invaded successfully. The germans were heaviy fortified and forced to fight a 2 front war. Allied succesfully liberated france of Nazi’s.

A

Movement on 23,000 japanese canadians, 1942-46. Threat to BC’s purity, gov believed there could be japanese spies. Moved all japanese people to internment camps where they took all belongings and money and auctioned them. The canadian war measures act allowed them to sweep houses and shut down businesses and schools. After the interment they were forced to be deported or live in the rocky mountains.
