1980: Asked if quebec should become politically independent while maintaining economic association with canada, 60% said NO
1995: asked if quebec should be an independent country while remaining economic and political partnership w canada, 50.58% said NO
What is the charter of rights and freedoms?
A charter that protects basic human rights and freedoms including freedom of expression, rights to equality etc. Necessary rights in a democratic society. Signed April of 1982 Queen elizebeth II signed it. Signed Canada act which ending british power over Canada.
Oka crisis
July-sep 1990, Oka Quebec. Land dispute between the Mohawk and the quebec police. There were plans to expand and build a gold course over “The pines” indigienous land. Barracades were built and a police officer died while trying to dismantle it. After 78 days, mohawk dismantled barracedes after the project was called off, gov bought land to prevent further disputes.

Meechlake and Charlottetown accords
Meech Lake: Suggested changes to consitiution in 1987 which would persuade quebec to agree to the 1982 consitituion. Do this by regocnizing them as a “Distinct society” failed to get all 10 provincial approvals by 1990
Charlottetown accord: 1992, suggested reognizing quebec as a distinct society, giving indigineous self government etc. put to referendum and 54% said no.
Residential schools
Created by christian churches and the canadian government to educate and convert indigienous kids and assimilate them into canadian society. they wanted to kill the indian in the child. Residential schools faced horrid conditions, abuse, racism, and discimination. Last one closed in 1996 saskachewan
The indian act
Indian act of 1920 stated that all indigienous kids must attend residential school

SOmalia 1992 - Civil war, famine violence, canadian troops sent to stabalize country, recivied critisim, part of UN peacekeeping
Rwanda 1994 - PEacekeep bc of genocide of 800k ppl, little intervention, lots of critism barely did anything
COngo 1960 - Political issues as new independent country, get belgians to withdraw, Sent canadian troops, succeeded in getting troops to withdraw but nothing else
