What was the Reichstag fire Decree and why was it instituted?

A

-The Reichstag building burned down by arson
-The Nazi party’s military claimed to have Apprehended a communist sympathizer responsible for setting the fire.
-Hitler convinces Hindenburg to institute Reichstag, fire decree and the enabling act which gives Hitler sleeping powers to make unilateral decisions.

Describe the invasion of Ethiopia by Italy

A

-Benito Mussolini, invades Ethiopia in 1935
-the League of Nations condemns the attack and attempts to impose economic sanctions but these are not supported by a majority of the member states.
-Britain and France try to keep the peace to the appeasement policy, but this is ignored as Italy resumes preparation’s for war.

How did World War 2 begin?

A
  1. Britain and France declare war on Germany following the invasion of Poland to maintain the geopolitical balance of power in the region.
  2. Russia declines to help Britain and France, at first
  3. Poland is secretly divided into a “buffer” zone.
    Russia joins the “Allied Powers”
  4. American isolationist policy wants nothing to do with European military conflict.
  5. Enters the war in December 1941 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Why didn’t Russia want to join the allied powers at first?

A
  • Russia feels betrayed after being excluded from the peace talks of the Treaty of Versailles.
    -Stalin and Hitler signed a non-aggression pact stating that they would never attack each other
    -Hitler broke this pact by invading Russia which caused Russia to join France and Britain
