6 million join workforce many whom married
numbers unionised doubled (with War Labour board support obs EM and AA barred)
conensus proved 75% wanted to remain in work after war and by 45 women made up 1/3 of the workforce, many whom with older children, taking double burden
daycare, contra, and Rosie enforced
SOCIAL
some acceptance of lesbianism (temporary tolerance)
fed gov. 31 daycare centres to support working women (erradicated after)
contraceptives and planned parenthood more accepted for family stability (not sexual liberation)
‘Rosie the Riveter’ propaganda to uphold gender sterotype while women in heavy industry, media attempt to preserve femininity
CONC-
first clearly durable turning point unlike the others prior being theoretical, women’s employment rates increase at a rate unreversed
yet socially, still yes but less durable, during and after this period marriage rates seen as all time high and younger and baby boom. cultural constraints however the war signalled a major turning point, women done with homemaker role had other outlet not previously able to pursue
