What are some factors of WW2?
Appeasement- Countries believed that if they let Germany get what they want a war wouldn’t start but they were wrong
Treaty of Versailles- made Germans unhappy
Failure of League of Nations- Hitler saw that the countries were weak and would be let off attacking another country because others had done the same
The American policy of isolationism- Hitler knew that USA wouldn’t stop him
The Nazi-Soviet pact- Hitlee thought the peace with the Soviet would give him more time to fight Britain and France in the west
What were the events up till the end of 1941:
Sep 1939- war begins Feb 1940- Nazis occupy Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belguim, France and Luxembourg May 1940- British evacuate Dunkirk July 1940- Battle of Britain Sep 1940- the Blitz June 1941- Nazis invade Soviet Dec 1941- held up in Russian winter Dec 1941- Pearl Harbor
Events from 1942-45:
June 1942 – American dive -bombers destroy the Japanese aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway October 1942 – General Montgomery’s troops defeat the Nazis at El Alamein
February 1943 – German General von Paulus surrenders at Stalingrad
July 1943 – Allies invade Sicily and Italy surrenders
Autumn 1943 – Hitler’s forces on the Eastern Front were defeated.
June 1944 – Britain and the USA invade France. 6 June was known as D-Day
August 1944 – Allies arrive in Paris
March 1945 – Allies cross the Rhine into Germany
April 1945 – Hitler commits suicide
May 1945 – Soviets now in Berlin - Germany surrenders
August 1945 – Cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki destroyed by Atomic bombs to end the war in the Far East.
