Long term causes why WW1 started:

A

Nationalism: countries thinking their the best
Militarism: people took pride in their armies and wanted to use them
Imperialism: lots of other countries had an empire and it led to tension
Alliances: the triple entente and the triple alliance we formed and it meant of all europe would be dragged into the war

What were the short term reasons why WW1 started:

A

28 July: Austria- Hungary blames serbia for killing the Archduke. It attacks serbia
29 July: Russia protect Serbia
1 August: Germany supports Austria- Hungary Germany declare war on Russia
2 August: Britain prepares warships
3 August: Germany declare was on France
4 August: Britain back up Belgium and declare war on Germany
6 August: Austria Hungary declare war on Russia
12 August: Britain and France declare war on Austria- Hungary

What was Germany’s master plan?

A

Schlieffen Plan: quickly defeat France with a huge knock out blow theough Belgium before moving the soldiers east to face rhe Russian army

What went wrong in Germany’s plan?

A

The Belgian army fought well and slowed down the charge. The BEF held the Germans back and then the Russians launched an attack on Germany.

Key parts about the WW1 layout:

A

Duckboards: stop troops sinking in the mud
Fire step: Soldies stood on them to fire over the top
Barbed wire: slowed down attacking troops
Artillery: huge guns that fired enormous explosive or poisonous shells
Gas bell: tell the troops to put their gas marks on
