lands or territories conquered or taken over by another country. They are important because they provide raw materials and a market for finished goods to the “mother” country. For example, they supply lumber, oil, minerals, etc.—yet at the same time they also buy back things like furniture.
Colonies
a situation where there is equal strength for each country. So that one country will not get too powerful and force their ideas and demand on other smaller and weaker countries
Balance of Power
you do not take a side during the conflict. You simply stand back and do not get involved
Neutrality
The belief in the power of strong armies and navies to decide issues
Militarism
Alliances are formed when countries band together against a common threat and pledge support to each other in times of war
Alliance Systems
Extending a country’s power and influence through military force
Imperialism
A feeling of deep loyalty to one’s people and homeland
